Conservation & Marsh Stewardship

Conservation at the Heart of the Club

At Rockland Wildfowlers Association, conservation is not simply an addition to the sport. It forms the foundation of responsible wildfowling and long-term marsh management. The future of the Broads depends on healthy wetlands, thriving wildlife populations and the careful protection of sensitive habitats. Through active stewardship of the marshes and waterways, the Association continues a long tradition of wildfowlers acting as custodians of the natural environment across the Norfolk Broads.

Practical Habitat & Wildlife Projects

The Association carries out a range of practical conservation projects throughout the year to help improve and protect local habitats. Members regularly take part in Broadland clean-up days, removing litter and debris from waterways and marshes that are enjoyed by wildlife and the wider community alike. The club also supports local biodiversity through woodland management, scrub control and the installation of owl and bat boxes, helping provide valuable nesting and roosting sites for species affected by changing land use across the countryside.

Sustainable Marsh Management

Responsible shooting management plays an important role in the club’s wider conservation efforts. Many marshes operate on restricted shooting days and rotational access, allowing areas to rest throughout the season and reducing unnecessary disturbance to wintering birds. This balanced approach helps maintain healthy wildfowl populations while protecting the character and ecological value of the marshes. Working alongside BASC and local conservation interests, the Association remains committed to ensuring that both wildfowling and the unique landscapes of the Norfolk Broads can be enjoyed for generations to come.
